Rates

in general

Rates for scholarly works range from $15-$20 per 1000 words. For books with large amounts of non-textual material (plates, illustrations, graphs, tables), rates range from $5-$7 per indexable pages.

For trade books, $11-$15 per 1000 words, or $4-$5 per indexable page.

Embedded indexes (indexes prepared within a Word manuscript, sometimes called “linked” indexes) are billed at the highest rate for the above ranges.

Revisions requiring up to three hours of my time are included in the cost, and correspondence/collaboration during the indexing process is welcome if desired.

Payment is due within 30 days of receipt of the index.

exceptions to rate windows...

Sometimes occur in projects with special considerations. Rush jobs (fewer than two weeks per 200 pages) may command a higher rate, and repagination will incur extra cost.

how to request a quote

To offer a quote, I need:

  • a timeline. When I can expect (fixed) pages from the press, and when the press needs the index returned. I understand these dates are subject to slippage—timely communication of schedule changes is necessary for me to manage your project.

  • a representative sample of your text—usually ten-ish pages from a middle chapter. Draft format is fine for this.

  • style guidelines/special instructions from the press, if any.

I’m happy to discuss particulars of your project. To get started, fill out the attached form:
